Mad Men: My Non-Review

For about a month now, I’ve been trying to catch up on AMC’s Mad Men which is currently in it’s fifth season.  Technically, I can’t call it ‘catching up” since I had not seen an episode of Mad Men before this marathon.

I started watching Mad Men as a cure for my boredom.  I thought I’d watch an episode here and there, no big deal.  But this so called “cure” has turned into an obsession, or a race to the finish, as I like to call it.

So why am I powering through this show so quickly?  Is it because I love Mad Men?  Did the critics get it right this time?  I don’t know.  I can’t seem to put my finger on it.  I love how the show fills me with nostalgia of a time I never knew.  Other than that, I am not sure what draws me in.  It could just be that Draper charm that does it.

So what’s my non-review?  Love the style.  ❤

I’ll try to get a more thorough review after I am entirely caught up.

Is There Something Worth Watching?

For a while now, I have been waiting for a show to consume me, enthrall me, captivate me, and complete me!  Excuse me for being melodramatic, but have you seen the shows “they” are expecting us to watch as of late?  I am not only referring to reality shows because there are some horrible shows out there in general!  Instead of focusing on the negative, let us focus on some of the series that have caught my eye.

One of the first shows that I recall getting into is Dark Angel (2000).  Do you remember that show?  It starred Jessica Alba as a genetically enhanced human in some weird futuristic world.  It was a pretty far-fetched premise, but hey, everything is possible, right?  I thought this show was amazing for the first season and a half or so.  I am sure this had to do with the show getting cancelled during the second season and the writers trying to tie loose ends together.

After I lost interest in Dark Angel, I moved on to Alias (2001).  Compared to Dark Angel, Alias was completely realistic!  Jennifer Garner’s character was a double agent for the CIA who traveled all over the world to save the day.  I was really into this show–well at least the first three seasons.  This always happens to me as is evident with Dark Angel.  I start to like a show, and I will lose interest as the season progresses due to the writers losing steam (this is my guess at least).  I may not have the best taste in television shows, but I know what I like!  And I apparently like action shows with kick-ass girls as the protagonists!

Since then, I had not been hooked on a show until Dexter (2006)!  I started watching Dex (yes, we are that close) during it’s third season.  Normally, I won’t start watching a show in the middle of the serious, but Dex has been an exception.  This summer, I decided to catch up on Dex to fully prepare me for the upcoming sixth season!  Yes, I am excited!

Even though Dex has captured my attention, it has yet to complete me!  I am still on the look out to find a series that will fill the void that Alias left behind!  I’ve thought about watching Mad Men (2007).  It has been a very popular series and I dig the fact that it is set in the 1960s.  But do I really want to catch up on all of those missed seasons?  Not really, not now at least!

So what did I do last night?  I decided to watch a new serious that is said to be Mad Menesque.  I am talking about Pan Am (2011).  Pan Am is another period drama based in a time when women were supposed to look pretty and that’s pretty much it (similar to Mad Men).  The first episode really didn’t do much for me.  I understand that premiere episodes are meant to set a series up and will have so much background character information–that is why, I will give Pan Am a chance to redeem itself next week.

Now I have a question for you:

What is your favorite series, and why?

I would appreciate some suggestions and I am sure anyone who reads this blog will appreciate them as well.

First World Problems Part 2

I don’t have cable television at home.  So when I come to my sister’s house, I like to look through her channels to see if there is anything I am missing.  Usually, I find out that there isn’t really anything worth watching.

As I sit here waiting for traffic to die down, I found something on television that is very gross to me.  On the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), I found a television show called Supersize vs Superskinny.  I am assuming that this is a British show due to the majority of people speaking in a British accent except for the narrator.  What they do is put an extremely skinny person and a morbidly obese person in a house and force them to eat each others’ meals for more than a few days.  Of course, the super skinny person eats very little, and the larger person eats way too much (which gets to be kind of disgusting!)

(Here is a video of the show I am referring to–the screen cap of this picture was a little NSFW, so I decided to just give you the link: click here.)

Even though I understand the concept of this show, I don’t agree with it.  How can they help an anorexic person by stuff his or her face with food?  I would think that the opposite would happen.  Instead of changing their eating habits for the better, they might be even more disgusted with food and be more careful about what they eat.  This can’t be healthy!

I wonder how successful this method is.  The underweight person in the episode I watched did have some success.  How long did they success last for?  Did she only keep this up for the show?

What do you think?
